So we might need clearance from the designer to allow this as an option.

This being said, looking through comments on BGG, it seems to be a rather common house rule.
More importantly, removing memory elements from a game is a very common adaptation on BGA because of turn-based mode.
You can expect people to remember things in a 30min game that you can't expect them to remember it when playing 1 turn every 2 days...
It pushes people into writing things down or computing the current situation by adding up what's in the log or do a "replay from" etc..
If you can rebuild hidden information via the log or "replay from" then the rule is in a way already broken and we should just display the info so as to put everyone back on the same footing. (Provided that "memory" isn't an quintessential component of the game in which case you probably simply do not allow turn-based mode for that game)
Take for instance what was done for the bags in "Automobiles".
With everything I explained above, I'm not even sure that we need author permission for this. But I fully understand if you feel that you do.
